إثبات الشهور الهلالية ومشكلة التوقيت الإسلامي

This book was written to address the problem of the crescent-based months which make up the Islamic calendar and determine the holy occasions of Ramadan, Eids, and Hajj. Both the astronomical and the Islamic jurisprudential aspects of the problem are treated in detail. In particular, this book was the first to make use of and publicize the astrophysical methods (contrast of brightness of the moon compared to the background sky) in determining the probability of observing the thin new crescent, i.e. the start of the Islamic month. A set of practical recommendations were made for both solving the “Ramadan/Eid problem” (knowing when the crescent is indeed visible) and for setting up a full, international Islamic calendar.
The book was co-written with Mohamed El-Atbi and Karim Meziane. It was first published in Algeria (Dar Al-Oumma) in 1993, then in Lebanon (Dar Al-Taliaa) in 1997.
